The Stoop Project

For several years Robert Gullie had contemplated the idea of documenting an inner city neighborhood being transformed by gentrification. In the spring of this year, he began what he calls,  "The Stoop Project." This effort took him repeatedly back to the mid-Troy Fifth Avenue area to photograph subjects around their homes and in the streets that become their back yards during the warm summer months.  Gullie's intent was to capture the residents of this neighborhood that is in the midst of a dramatic change.  In return for sitting, Gullie presented each subject with a copy of their portrait and a promise to include the portraits in a gallery show. The floral design shop (Pi Naturals), one of the first business in this area, offered to dedicate their space for the exhibit.   This exhibit was funded by a grant from the New York State Foundation of the Arts.
